YouthTech Contest Winners Annouced (Philadelphia, PA) - On Thursday, June 16, 2005, thirty 9th through 12th graders from the Philadelphia area high schools will be honored for using technology to transform their communities in innovative ways. This spring, the Verizon Foundation, in partnership with United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania conducted the Second Annual Verizon YouthTech Essay Contest that challenged young people to find ways to use technology to improve their communities by engaging and utilizing technology. details PC Recycling Day On Saturday, April 16, Teaming for Technology (T4T), an initiative of United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania, will sponsor a PC Recycling Day at Montgomery County Senior Adult Activities Center in Norristown from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Only the following items will be accepted: monitors, keyboards, mice, and Windows computers with a minimum Pentium II processor. Recycled computers will be given to computer refurbishers, who will re-build the computers and distribute them to agencies in the Philadelphia region. A donation of $5 per computer or monitor is requested to cover the costs associated with refurbishing and recycling electronics. Teaming for Technology and our partners are bringing to the underserved
communities of Philadelphia. The piece profiles the Cox family of West
Powelton, recipients of wireless internet made available to the neighborhood
by T4T Recognition Breakfast Teaming for Technology (T4T) held its first annual recognition breakfast to acknowledge some individuals that have been instrumental in making T4T a success. Also honored were the students that completed the Teen Technology Network (TTN) program. Corporation On May 24, the United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania presented its Community Impact Partners Award to the One Economy Corporation at its annual Leadership Awards event. This award recognizes foundations, agencies, and organizations that play a major role in advancing the Community Impact Plan. One Economy Corporation is the leading national organization
addressing web content for low-income people through public policy efforts
and programs that provide technology access to low-income housing, online
consumer content, and youth leadership initiatives. Locally, United
Way partners with One Economy to provide the Beehive web portal, which
provides consumers with access to content and services needed to achieve
economic independence. One Economy also provided the model for matching
Beehive content with training and youth educational programs such as
the Teen
Technology Network. CTCNet Planning Retreat Notes from May 14 On May 14, 2004 a retreat was held at Project H.O.M.E.'s Honickman Learning Center to give the community organizations in the Delaware Valley an opportunity to build consensus for the creation of an official CTCNet Chapter. Many organization that aspire to effectively provide their community with access to technology were involved in this process. The retreat feature a talk by Kavita Singh, Executive Director of CTCNet. details Verizon YouthTech Contest Winners Announced Teaming for Technology and Verizon have partnered to create the YouthTech Contest, an essay competition that showcases Philadelphia high school students' vision for improving their community with technology. Participants will recognized at a ceremony on April 28, 2004. details Teen Technology Network Launched in West Philadelpia The Teen Technology Network is officially underway with a kick off ceremony held at the People's Emergency Center on February 4. This collaborative is designed for students of West Philadelphia and University City high schools, and it aims to educate them academically and improve their use of technology as a tool. details Teaming for Technology Honored Teaming for Technology’s work with non-profit organizations has earned the “Techie Award” from the Delaware Valley Technical Recruiters Network (DVTRN). The annual award was presented by DVTRN President Bob Waldo on January 14 in recognition of T4T’s exceptional effort in promoting technology in disadvantaged communities. Technology Outreach Director, Stephen Rockwell was on hand to accept the honor given “for outstanding commitment to technology in the greater Philadelphia area.” More information about DVTRN can be found at their website, www.dvtrn.org. |
