Over a year ago, Teaming
for Technology at United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania launched
the T4T Digital Inclusion Program that has promoted our local
Philadelphia version of the Beehive (www.thebeehive.org/philly).
The Beehive is a website developed by One Economy Corporation,
a non-profit organization based in Washington DC. This website
contains extensive information and resources about the things
that matter to people: money, health, jobs, school and family.
The Beehive targets low to moderate income families looking
to improve their quality of life. Through streamlining social
services information, the Beehive provides a central online
location to access important information seamlessly amongst
commercial and social service providers.
We have recently complete a report based from data collected
from users at 13 Community Technology Centers (CTCs) throughout
the region. To view the report, visit http://www.uwsepa.org/team4tech/research_reports.htm
This month's agency of the month is Universal Companies.
Universal Companies has provided members of the South Philadelphia
Community a plethora of resources since their inception in 1993.
They have built schools, built homes and provided their community
with a number of workforce and economic development programs.
Universal has been utilizing T4T's resources. They are currently
taking advantage of our on- site training option. They are committed
to having their staff become International Computer Drivers
License certified. Universal also took advantage of T4T's free
hardware distribution on March 5th and have involved themselves
with other Teaming for Technology programs. Check them
out at www.universalcompanies.org.
We have had unusually warm weather this week, which may mean
that spring is near and with that comes allergies! The Beehive
provides great information if you, like many others, encounter
sinus problems, allergic reactions to pollen, and more. Go to
the Health section, click on "Health Topics," click
on "Injuries, Sickness, and Disease," and this will
lead you to more detailed information on allergic conditions
(under "Common Conditions"). www.thebeehive.org/health/
4.) Featured Website

http://libwww.library.phila.gov/onebook/obop04/index.htm

The Philadelphia Foundation said last Monday it plans to award
in June the first round of grants from the fund established
to receive the $60 million in contributions that the Eagles
and Phillies will make as part of the lease requirements on
their new stadiums.
The first round of grants will come from the Strategic Investments
in Youth component of the Fund for Children. The fund was established
to receive the $1 million contributions that the Eagles and
Phillies are each required to make annually for the next 30
years.
The first round of grants will be $500,000 and will go to nonprofit
organizations that actively engage youth in their decision-making
processes. Community organizations that provide services for
children in Philadelphia may apply for the funding.
The foundation anticipates awarding up to $1.5 million from
the fund this year.
“Spyware is any technology that aids in gathering information
about a person or organization without their knowledge. On the
Internet, spyware is programming that is put in someone's computer
to secretly gather information about the user and relay it to
advertisers or other interested parties.”
Usually spyware is a result of installing third party software.
Do not fret. There is a way to diagnose and remove these resource
hogging programs. Install and run Ad-Aware by Lavasoft from
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/.
Run the program, scan your system, and remove all programs which
Ad-Aware finds. Removing these programs increases the efficiency
at which your computer runs and helps improve Internet surfing.
