Educational Technology Plan.

3.) Ohio Community Technology Day

The Daily Reporter put an OH Community Technology Day article on their
front page! Read it at
www.occcn.org/articles.htm#dailyreporter2

PRESS RELEASE

OHIO COMMUNITY TECHNOLOGY DAY DECLARED A GRAND SUCCESS!

Columbus, OH October 15, 2003 A total of 34 representatives from 23
Community Technology Centers (CTCs) and 8 organizations that support
the mission of equal access to technology from around the state
converged on the State's capitol on Wednesday October 15th. Their
mission for the day was to educate legislators about the valuable
role Community Technology Centers play providing free, local access
to computer and information technology.

This event marks the first combined, coordinated effort of dozens of
activists/community leaders/volunteers to establish the legitimacy of
the community technology cause. Organized in groups of two to three,
the participants met with a total of 31 legislators or their aides.
This does not include the contacts made in the hallways and
elevators. One participant was very impressed with the hallway and
elevator meetings. He suggested next year time should be scheduled
for participants to just walk around the State House with name badges
hanging around their necks.

Bob Taft, the Governor of Ohio, declared October 15, 2003 to be Ohio
Community Technology Day throughout Ohio. Community Technology
Centers provide free or low cost access to technology training,
computer equipment, digital applications, multi-media equipment and
the Internet for low-income communities that would otherwise lack
access to these technologies.

The Ohio Community Computing Network (OCCN) coordinated the day, with
the assistance of the Ohio Association of Nonprofit Organizations
(OANO) and State Representative Jon Peterson. OCCN, a membership-
based alliance of more than 60 Ohio CTCs, has coalesced the
relatively new movement into a visible force.

Via the "Debriefing Questionnaire" (or feedback form) participants
commented on how valuable the day was. Meeting with legislators was
a new experience for many of the participants. They appreciated the
opportunity to participate in the legislative day, the tips on how to
convey issues to legislators, the tour of the state house and how
well the event was organized.

Only two other states, Illinois and California, have held similar
community technology education legislative education days.
