Tech Tip #1 Changing Screen Resolution:
Have you ever seen a graphics designers, or a programmers display? Usually they use large monitors coupled with high resolutions to acheive a large display area that can fit a lot of information. While you may not have a 21 inch monitor or a super high performance graphics adapter, you can still acheive results better than you might expect. The Microsoft Windows operating system often defaults to a display
resolution of 640X480 pixels at 256 colors. This results in a screen area a bit too small for viewing todays high impact web pages. To increase your screen resolution, right click anywhere on the desktop and select "properties" from the menu. Click on the "settings" tab of the Display properties menu. There is a slider for resolution, which you can
increase to at least 800X600 pixels. There is also a pull down menu for color bit depth, which you should increase to 16bit for realistic looking images. Note that this may slightly slow down your machine, but these higher resolutions a color settings are becoming the standard for todays user.

Tech Tip #2 Run Defrag Performance
Your computers hard disk is a random access device. This means that the computer can read to or write data from anywhere on the drive at any time without having to'fast-forward' through the data at the beginning of the drive.
While your 400 page dissertation may seem to be all in one file, the reality of what is going on at the hardware level is that a few pages may be stored here and there on the drive. The File Allocation Table connects these segments or fragments together so that the file appears to the user as one piece. Over time files on your hard disk may become so fragmented as to slow system performance, or even jeapordize the integrity of the data. Microsoft Windows ships with a utility called "Disk Defragmentor"
(Start Menu, Programs -> Accesories -> System Tools -> Disk Defragmentor.) which will reorganise your drive at the lowest level to make sure that files are stored in contiguos segments. This is a good thing! Now to edit your dissertation the computer only has to read from one segment of the disk, rather than piece together your file from fragments located everywhere. I reccomend running 'defrag' about once a month to maintain file integrity and system performance.
